Deploying handhelds

Deployment process

To deploy handhelds successfully, you must complete the following actions:

Selecting a deployment method

You can deploy handhelds using the administration computer, wirelessly, or using the Desktop Manager.

If you deploy a handheld using the administration computer, the handheld must be connected to the

administration computer.

If you deploy a handheld wirelessly or using the Desktop Manager, the handheld does not have to be in

your possession during the deployment process.

Action Procedure

Install Handheld Software on the handheld if the desired

version is not installed on the handheld.

Provision or activate the handheld by performing one of the

following actions:

• assign the handheld to a user

• install service books on the handheld

Populate the handheld with previously received email messages. ! See "Enabling email prepopulation" on page 17 for more

information.

Synchronize PIM data on the handheld. ! See "Selecting a deployment method" on page 15 for more

information.

• provides complete control over the initial

handheld activation and personal information

management (PIM) synchronization processes

• assign software configurations to users and

load software configurations onto handhelds

• initial load of PIM data is transferred from the

administration computer to the handheld

using a serial or USB connection

• load Handheld Software applications onto

handhelds during the initial deployment

process

• the number of handhelds that you can deploy

at one time is limited to the number of

communication ports that are on the

administration computer

• handhelds must be in your possession and

connected to the administration computer on

which the BlackBerry Manager is installed
